ABOUT STEVE

Steve-Minors3

I started life on 30th January 1944 in Lambeth Hospital, Brook Drive in S E. London, just across the river from 'St Mary Le Bow', within the sound of the bells, a little `cockney sparrow'.

The family home in Kennington having been bombed out, my earliest years were spent in Norfolk, then Carshalton in Surrey, the family home, where my younger sister, Laureen was born. At the age of six we moved back to S W London, living just outside Brixton. My schooling was at Archbishop Tenison's Grammar school in Kennington. It was during these years that my mother helped cultivate my early interest in music and encouraged me to learn to play both banjo and guitar, playing with other young musicians in various bands, usually performing in youth clubs.  During this period I developed a taste for Blues and heavy rock, which has stayed with me to the present day.

On leaving school I started work as a trainee architect in a practise in Bloomsbury, continuing further education at Brixton School of Building, studying structures and building. It was there that I met Kip, who was also on the same course and then later his cousin Andy, the three of us being the early nucleus of The Carnaby.  We formed Stateside Souls, an early Blues band and then progressed to forming `The Carnaby' a 'mod group' of that era.

I married in 1965 and moved to Epsom, Surrey and had two daughters,Julie and Maxine and later my son Mark.

The band broke up in 1966 and I continued with Andy, both writing songs and doing some session work.

In order to bring up my family, I went back into building in 1970 to earn a steady living . I was Company Engineer for a West London Construction firm, who also had premises in Surrey.  In 1983-84, along with a work associate and friend, Dan Heymann, we formed our own Building and Development Company 'Cornerstone Properties' and I had a happy and successful partnership with Dan, till I retired earlier this year, although I have been back writing and recording demos with Andy since 2007-2008, and hope to release a series of new numbers in the near future.
